Bedroom Organization: The Sequel

When you last saw our blog we’d established that the bedroom is the most important room of the house for your health organization-wise. We further broke that down to say that we should only have things in the bedroom that facilitate meeting the goals of the bedroom – namely sleep and sometimes romance. Finally, we pointed out that this meant that the bedroom is a bad place to do work, watch television or use any electronic devices. We further said no clutter should accumulate in the bedroom.

This week we get into a few more specifics and also focus on what to do when you inevitably decide to not follow some or all of our advice. ;D

Let’s start with some generally useful information from ancient Chinese culture.

4 Bedroom Organization Tips By WOW Organizing

1. Feng Shui and Bedroom Organization

Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese custom of using one’s surroundings to optimize energy flow. Whether or not you believe in the spiritual side of this ancient art, many have found that they simply feel better in rooms that utilize the practices of Feng Shui.

One of the primary tenets of Feng Shui is one we talk about a lot here – clutter drains energy. But it has a few other suggestions that you may find useful – particularly in the bedroom. Standard disclaimer – this is a tradition that is thousands of years old that has practitioners that devote their entire careers to it. We are not attempting to tell you everything there is to know about Feng Shui – just to share a few bits of organizing information. If you like what you read, it’s an interesting subject worth reading more about.

2. Clutter Disrupts Energy Flow – Put Your Objects Away

  • Mirrors Multiply Whatever Energy They Point At – Don’t let mirrors magnify clutter. If you have a mirror in your bedroom, use it to make the room feel more spacious, not more crowded.
  • Don’t Put Anything on Your Bed
  • Don’t Use Busy Containers – Ideally, the best way to avoid this is to buy an attractive vessel to keep your lotions and other items that are in your bedroom. Bed Beyond, Marshall’s, and TJ Maxx have many choices for attractive containers with or without pumps you can put your nighttime toiletries in.
    • That also allows you to buy toiletry items in larger quantities saving money and producing less waste!
    • But if you don’t want to do this or haven’t had time yet, a quick solution is to peel the labels off of your containers. Many come off easily. Those that don’t or those that leave residue can be aided with Goo Gone.

3. Don’t Let Perfect Be the Enemy of Good Bedroom Organization

Many of us live in smaller spaces – studios, dorm rooms, or homes that we share with roommates. When you live in smaller spaces, it’s difficult to keep all bed-related items out of the bedroom since the bedroom may be the only space we have for ourselves. Fear not – there are solutions to meet the small space needs that won’t force you to choose between living without sleep or living without possessions.

The primary solutions in these situations are containers and furniture.

So let’s say you have to have a TV in your room – just once more, we DO NOT recommend this, alright that’s the last time – the way to not let it disrupt your sleep cycle is to

4. Bedroom Organization Suggestions

  1. Clearly separate out the time you are watching it from the time you are going to bed with a ritual which might include…
  2. Putting it away. Televisions should be in a piece of furniture that has doors you can close when not in use. This way, your TV is not a distraction, even subconsciously.

This same concept can be used with other items you have to have in the room. If, for example, you have medications that you need to keep in your bedroom, be sure to put them inside of a nightstand (again, with doors) or a drawer.

Don’t allow your dressers’ and night stands’ surfaces to become collecting places for clutter.  If you only have a small amount of space and must utilize the tops of your dresser, place baskets, or other containers on top of it. Place any necessary items inside of them. That way, they are not in the way or making your room less attractive or restful.

These solutions are also helpful when you can’t quite commit to leaving the outside world fully outside. Especially when trying to go to bed. If you can’t leave them outside, you can at least put them away.

So there you have it. A lifetime of organization experience and millennia of ancient tradition all in relation to your bedroom.  All distilled into two easy-to-digest blog posts. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need a little rest myself. It’s time to get away from this computer and unwind!
